This month I spent some time cleaning up the map, adding a few new features and, as always, adding new licenses and land use applications.  Click the download button on the left to acquire the updates.

The most important structural change is the consolidation of licenses for points of diversion that have both a use and storage license.  I felt that it was misrepresenting the actual number of projects in addition to making the map unnecessarily awkward to use.  Next month I will highlight those applications with a storage license since I do not consider them run of the river.  If you have another opinion on this matter feel free to drop me a note.

I have also added the stated power output for all of the projects I could find data for.

Some recent changes in water license rights holders.

A new map with many changes is now available for download. 

The format of the map has been greatly improved by the addition of dynamic layers which the user can choose to display or hide. This has greatly simplified maintenance which will allow me to update the map on weekly basis. Click on the 'Download Hydro Map' link on the left to download the new map.

I have added Energy Purchase Agreement information so users can see who has signed a contract with BC Hydro.  All licenses with Energy Purchase Agreements are indicated with a light bulb icon.

In 2000 BC Hydro contracted Sigma Engineering to documenting potential hydro power sites in British Columbia. From it came the following report:

Inventory of Undeveloped Opportunities at Potential Micro Hydro Sites in British Columbia

Then again in 2002 Sigma Engineering was commissioned to complete a follow up study:

Green Energy Study for British Columbia Phase 2: Mainland

Combined, these reports summarize the hydro potential of more than 900 streams, lakes and rivers in the Province.  Ultimately these reports became the prime prospecting tools used by today's independent power companies. As contracted energy prices increase we should expect to see more and more of these water bodies commercialized for hydro power. I have extracted some of the information from these reports and displayed it in a new map layer called Hydro Potential.

Since the initial publication of the map there have been 9 new applications for land use relating to hydro power. 

In addition to adding these new applications I have also mapped some missing points of diversion.  The links in the previous post will download the new map.
